Students, Sandoz Center to produce pictorial history
A new pictorial history of the Chadron area is in the works. It will be part of the Images of America series produced by Arcadia Publishing based in South Carolina. Collection and organization of the material for the book will be spearheaded by students in the Composition II course at Chadron State College taught by Deb Carpenter. It is planned that the book will be available by Fur Trade Days in early July.
The book is expected to include about 200 photos and will sell for $19.95.
Alliance, Hot Springs and North Platte are among regional communities that have worked with Arcadia to produce similar books.
Most of the photos in the Chadron book will come from three sources—the Graves and Slattery collections that have been donated to Chadron State College and are stored in the Sandoz Center, and the hundreds of photos possessed by the Dawes County Historical Museum.
Because of the volume of photos available, both Carpenter and Korte say choosing which ones to print may be the most difficult phase of the project.
The book will have five chapters. They are 1, Early Chadron; 2, Buffalo and Cattle; 3, Rails and Trails; 4, the Changing Face of Chadron; and 5, Surrounding Areas.
Korte said that a majority of the photos will be digitalized by the state of the art equipment in the Sandoz Center and sent to the publisher on compact disks.
. Royalties from the book sales will be used for scholarships to CSC.
This is the second time that Carpenter’s students have worked with the Sandoz Center on a history project. Last spring, the Composition II class gathered photos of Chadron State and organized them into panel displays that hung in the Sandoz Center last summer and are available for future exhibits.
