California literature professor to speak
A professor who teaches reading methods and children’s literature at Azusa Pacific University in California will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 19 in the Student Center at Chadron State College. The public is welcome to attend.
Sheryl O’Sullivan’s topic will be “Character Education Through Children’s Literature.” She says stories are natural vehicles for discussing moral development. Her presentation will include a discussion of character education, the rationale for using children’s books to address character education in the classroom and a look at specific techniques and methods for using children’s literature for this purpose.
Prior to becoming a college professor, she was an elementary teacher and principal. She was on the founding board of directors of Sycamore School for the Gifted in Indianapolis. She also studied Celtic mythology while living in Ireland.
O’Sullivan’s presentation will be a part of the monthly meeting of the Western Nebraska Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education fraternity.
